Buyer’s Guide

The Wedding Resale • Buyer’s Guide

Something loved.
Something right for you.

A beautiful wedding find starts with the right questions. Learn how to evaluate listings, talk with sellers, arrange delivery, and choose a payment method before you commit.

Wedding reception tables decorated with flowers and elegant place settings

Start with clear expectations. The Wedding Resale connects buyers and sellers. Before purchasing, agree directly with the seller on the item, price, delivery, payment, and return terms. Do not assume that a listing includes authentication, escrow, or a refund guarantee.

01 • Look beyond the pretty photo

Know exactly what you’re buying.

Wedding photos show an item at its best. Your job is to understand its condition today—and whether it works for your plans.

See the actual item

Ask for recent, well-lit photos from several angles, including labels, undersides, and any flaws. A styled photo or brand image alone cannot show current condition.

For an expensive item, request a short video or a fresh photo showing a detail you choose. This adds context; it does not guarantee authenticity.

Read the details

Confirm measurements, material, color, brand, quantity, and everything included. “Excellent condition” means different things to different people.

Ask specifically about stains, odors, damage, missing parts, previous repairs, and alterations.

Calculate the real cost

Add shipping or pickup travel, cleaning, alterations, repairs, and missing pieces to the asking price.

Your total: item price + delivery + preparation. Compare that total with your budget and realistic alternatives.

Check the seller, too. Look for consistent details and clear answers. Review seller history or feedback where available. A receipt or brand label can help, but neither proves authenticity on its own. If the item matters financially, consider independent assessment before buying.

Check what matters for your category.

DRESSES

Get current garment measurements, alteration history, hem length, bustle details, and close-ups of the bodice, closures, lining, and train. Ask when it was cleaned and how it was stored.

DECOR

Confirm usable quantities, dimensions, stability, chips, wax residue, missing hardware, and assembly needs. Check your venue’s rules before buying candles, hanging decor, or large structures.

ACCESSORIES

Check veil length and tears, shoe measurements and sole wear, jewelry clasps, missing stones, and metal or material details. Ask about repairs and cleaning options.

02 • Make the conversation count

Good questions prevent expensive surprises.

Keep answers in writing and save the listing, photos, and messages. Be friendly, specific, and clear about your wedding date.

Copy this message to the seller.

Hi! I’m interested in your [item]. My wedding is on [date], and I would need it by [date]. Could you please confirm:

  1. Is it still available, and are the photos of the item in its current condition?
  2. What are the exact measurements, quantity, and included pieces?
  3. Are there any stains, odors, damage, repairs, alterations, or missing parts?
  4. Could you send close-up photos of [specific areas]?
  5. What is the full price, including delivery to [ZIP/postal code], or where could I collect it?
  6. When could it ship or be picked up, and how would it be packaged?
  7. Which payment methods do you accept, and what are your return or cancellation terms?

Thank you! I’d like to confirm the details before making a decision.

Share only the information needed at each stage. A postal code is usually enough for an initial shipping estimate.

Pause when the answers don’t add up. Pressure to pay immediately, changing item details, refusal to show current photos, or requests for unusual payment methods are reasons to step back. Never share passwords or verification codes with a seller.

03 • Give your find a clear route home

Plan delivery before you pay.

Work backward from the date you need the item ready—not just your wedding date. Leave time for delays, inspection, cleaning, fittings, or repairs.

If the seller ships it

  • Confirm shipping cost, dispatch date, carrier, and estimated arrival.
  • Agree on protective packaging, especially for glass, delicate fabric, or bulky decor.
  • Discuss tracking, insurance, and signature delivery where appropriate. Check coverage limits and exclusions.
  • Confirm the address through the payment provider’s required process.
  • Agree who will contact the carrier if a parcel is lost or damaged, and keep shipment records.

On arrival: photograph the packaging and inspect promptly. Keep packing materials if there is a problem.

If you collect it locally

  • Choose a suitable public meeting place when practical, and let someone know your plans.
  • Bring another person for large collections or appointments where you feel more comfortable with company.
  • Inspect the item and count every piece before completing payment.
  • Measure your vehicle and check loading help, stairs, and dismantling needs.
  • Record the items collected and the agreed payment in a receipt or written message.

For deposits: confirm the purpose, refund terms, and payment protections first. Do not send one simply because you feel rushed.

04 • Understand the payment before sending it

Choose a method with clear terms.

Payment protections vary by provider, country, transaction type, and delivery arrangement. Check the current rules for your specific purchase before sending money.

Method What to understand
Credit card When accepted through a legitimate checkout, credit cards may offer dispute rights. Ask your issuer about applicable rules and deadlines. Verify the checkout address and recipient.
PayPal Goods & Services Eligible purchases may qualify for Purchase Protection. Check exclusions, claim deadlines, and rules for local collection. Use the purchase payment type; Friends & Family payments are not covered by PayPal Purchase Protection.
Cash at collection Inspect and count the items before paying. Keep a receipt. Cash does not provide a payment-provider dispute process, and recovering money can be difficult.
Other payment apps Do not assume an app protects purchases. Check whether the exact transaction qualifies and whether purchase protection must be selected.

Avoid payment requests you cannot comfortably verify. Gift cards, cryptocurrency, money-transfer services, and personal transfers to an unfamiliar seller can be difficult to recover. Open the provider’s official app or website yourself, check the recipient and amount, and save the transaction record.

Set return expectations before buying.

Ask whether the seller accepts returns, for which reasons, within what period, and who pays return shipping. Fit, a different-looking color, or a change of mind may fall outside payment-provider protection. A seller’s return policy and a provider’s dispute process are separate things.

Your final check

Ready to say “yes” to the find?

Use this quick checklist before committing. Checkmarks are for this visit and are not saved.

If something goes wrong

Document the issue with photos and a clear timeline. Contact the seller promptly and explain the resolution you are requesting. Keep the item and packaging unchanged where practical while checking the provider’s instructions. If needed, contact your payment provider through its official channels before its deadline. Suspected fraud can also be reported at ReportFraud.ftc.gov in the U.S.

A little clarity goes a long way

Buyer questions, answered.

Is it safe to buy secondhand wedding items online?

Every purchase needs its own checks. Current photos, clear answers, realistic pricing, written terms, and an appropriate payment method can help you make a more informed decision. No checklist eliminates every risk.

Should I buy a dress based on its label size?

Use current garment measurements and alteration details. Bridal sizing varies, and previous alterations can change the fit. A seamstress can help you assess whether the dress could work for you.

What if the seller says the item is final sale?

Ask what that means in writing before paying. Do not assume a return will be accepted if the item does not fit or you change your mind. Separately check your payment provider’s rules for non-delivery or a materially misdescribed item.

How early should I buy?

Allow enough time for the agreed delivery window, inspection, cleaning, and any fittings or repairs. Dresses and custom-sized items usually need more preparation than ready-to-use decor. Avoid relying on a last-minute arrival for an essential item.

Does a featured listing mean the seller or item is verified?

Do not treat paid placement or a featured label as proof of authenticity, condition, or trustworthiness. Apply the same checks to every listing.
